Our Knock-Out Technology

The 411 on Ceremony Portraits

Ceremony portraits are a coveted pose for graduates and family members. In fact, depending on the scenery, ceremony portraits at some universities can be more popular with graduates than their handshake photograph. The best ceremony portraits are usually taken immediately after departing this stage, which allows the graduate to hold up the diploma cover that was just received moments before. Of course, we’ll gladly work with you to determine the most suitable location for ceremony portraits at your ceremony.

The Problem with Green Screens

It’s common practice to use the ceremony portrait at commencement to “render” multiple backgrounds, giving graduates more choices for this pose. Unfortunately, many photography companies still utilize outdated green screens technology to generate multiple background options. This is unfortunate because green screens often yield inconsistent results from graduate to graduate, especially for those who have the color green in their clothing, graduation regalia, or jewelry.

For example, a graduate with a green necklace would likely see the background visible through her neck in her rendered portraits. With the large number of graduates at your ceremony, it would take an exhaustive amount of time to manually correct for these inherent green screen limitations.

Pro Pics has solved that problem.

Instead of green screens, our company pioneered the use of new technology that utilizes AI to accurately remove the background from each ceremony portrait image, while perfectly preserving the graduate, regalia, jewelry, and diploma cover. We refer to this as our “knock out” system, because it (figuratively) knocks the background out of the graduate’s photo.

With the background precisely removed, we then digitally overlay each graduate’s ceremony portrait on top of a wide variety of University-approved backgrounds.

Gorgeous images every time.

Our “knock out” technology delivers more beautiful portraits than older green screen systems could ever provide. It also enables us to photograph graduates in front of a simple white backdrop, instead of a neon green backdrop, which is less attractive to those in attendance at your ceremony.

Of course, since our photographers can take images faster than graduate names can be announced, these ceremony portraits will not cause a delay or bottleneck in the flow of graduates to or from the stage. We’ll gladly work with you, the commencement coordinator, to determine the most suitable location for these portraits at your ceremony.
